On iPhone applications and widgets

There is some evidence that Apple is going to open to the third party widget and application development for the iPhone. Yesterday Apple released the Dashcode Developer Beta toolkit for OS X Tiger and this was taken by the mac community as a sign of a new “open” strategy.

What is almost clear is that Apple is going to control the software delivery for iPhone. The distribution model could be the one of the widget downloading area on Apple site.

Recently Merlin Mann of 43Folders posted an interesting podcast on this topic: MacWorld Magazine’s Jason Snell and DaringFireball.net’s John Gruber are talking about the likely future of applications for the recently announced iPhone.

Who will be allowed to play? How does it affect the ostensible competition? Will this end up feeling more like a phone with an iPod, a Mac with a phone, or something altogether different?

Software on iPhone? That would make one awesome handheld gaming device! Though I wonder.. if Apple is going to control software delivery, will this be anything like Xbox's "Creators Club" with a paid subscription and "compile from source" only?

Tony, I think we have to wait till the end of 2007 to have more detailed information about gaming facilities on iPhone...
